Governor Obaseki, Shaibu go to court and insist on justice for the sexual abuse of a seven year old child. According to the First lady, anyone found in such an act must face the law.
The wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, the state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu and his wife, Marian on Wednesday the 16th of June, 2021, went to the State Magistrate Court, located in Sapele Road, Benin, in relation to the case of a seven-year-old victim of sexual harrasment.
According to the case, a 55-year-old Micheal Ogboke, who owns a laundry shop in the premises of the state police command headquarters, allegedly took carnal knowledge of the minor whose name has been withheld.
The accused was first prosecuted on the 17th of May 2021 and subsequently detained in prison custody.
While addressing journalists on Wednesday at the court, the Edo First Lady repeated her commitment to making sure that anyone found guilty of sexual and gender-based violence in the state, must face the full justice of the law, despite the level of connection the person may have.
Furthermore, she said that the Governors of the 36 states and President Muhammadu Buhari have also announced a state-of-emergency regarding sexual and gender-based violence in the country.
The first Lady noted that the Edo state government has strengthened the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, as evidence that it is committed to putting an end to gender-based violence and crime.
Furthermore, she disclosed that Governor Godwin Obaseki will assent to law this week and will be implemented upon the occurrence of any case that has to do with gender-based violence in the state.
She said:
“The law will take its full course, regardless of who is involved, whether rich or poor, because we won’t allow our children to be violated and their future destroyed anymore,” Mrs Obaseki assured.
The First lady is doing her part with her position to make the state and country as a whole safer.
