Police reveals that IPOB men are gathering in Edo State

Police reveals that IPOB men are gathering in Edo State as the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday the 2nd of June, 2021 took its secession message to Edo State.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Operation Restore Peace in Southsouth, Moses Jitoboh, said policemen are currently on the trail of the separatist agitators.

He stated that the group members have held secret meetings at Igbanke, Ubiaja, Iguelaba, Igueben, Okhiahe and Ologbo, which are Igbo speaking communities.

The DIG also spoke on the activities of the group at the launch of Operation Restore Peace in Southsouth that took place in Benin, the state capital.

Noting that Edo and Bayelsa were the only states currently enjoying relative peace in Nigeria, the DIG  advised residents of the Southsouth not to allow IPOB to spread its secession messages in the zone.

Furthermore, he also advised the residents of the communities to always report the presence of any suspected secession agitators to the police.

While responding to the call by stakeholders to profile persons recruited into vigilance groups in Edo State, Jitoboh asked Commissioner of Police Phillip Ogbadu to work in relation with the heads of the groups to get rid of all the criminals from the state.

One of the participants at the  meeting, Odiase Ehiabhi, stirred controversy when he claimed that many members of the vigilance groups also belonged to cult groups.

Lagos lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday urged the Federal Government to engage the various separatists groups in the country to hose down the tensions and agitations.

The SAN made the appeal while speaking at the South-West Zonal Public Hearing of the House of Representatives Special Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution held in Lagos.

He stated that he spoke on behalf of Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB). His suggestion was that the government should engage the groups rather instead of declaring war on them.

He said: “We are suggesting that the Federal Government should enter into meaning dialogue with all separatists groups so that perceived injustice can be addressed.

“This is the only way to guarantee peace in the country”.
