OAU Staff Commits Suicide – Osun State
OAU Staff Commits Suicide – Osun State; An Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) staff commits suicide due to depression.
One of the staff members at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Fisayo Oyeniyi, committed suicide on Thursday the 25th of March because he was facing depression.
Abiodun Olanrewaju, the spokesperson of the institution, disclosed that the deceased killed himself some hours after informing people that he was fed up with life.
Oyeniyi worked in the armed squad of the security department of the university prior to when he took his life.
Information was gathered that the deceased sent a message to his old mother, his wife, and two daughters. In the messages he sent, he made it clear that he was depressed and tired of life.
The PRO of the university stated that “Oyeniyi left office and proceeded to hang himself just some hours after forwarding a text message to his mother, wife and children that he was fed up with this life.”
“Unfortunately, he didn’t want his co-workers to know. He didn’t think they would suspect anything. Some hours after he sent the text message, he proceeded to take his life. His lifeless body was found, dangling in his room.”
“The management of the university sympathized with his mother, wife, and two children. It was extremely disheartening,” Olanrewaju exclaimed.
The rate at which a lot of people are choosing to take their lives is alarming. We hope that at this point, more attention should be paid to mental health. A lot of people are suffering in silence because mental health is not something a lot of people pay attention to specifically here in Nigeria.
The average Nigerian is expected to be strong and this is a social stigma for anyone going through depression but can’t speak up for fear of being judged or perceived to be odd, weak, or having self-pity.
In another recent development, the high court in Idah has sentenced Ocholi Edicha from Kogi State to 12 years and six months in prison for his role in the assassination of Salome Abuh, the PDP leader.
According to reports, Edicha pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a felony, murder, and armed robbery.
