Nigeria to reopen airports for international flights-Enugu, Kano, & Port Harcourt
Nigeria is set to reopen airports for international flights- Enugu, Kano, and Port Harcourt. Proper safety measures are in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
President Muhammadu Buhari had, sometime in March 2020 ordered that international flights be suspended to limit the spread of the virus and halt imported cases.
The Nigerian Government has announced international flights at the Enugu, Kano, and Port Harcourt airport.
The current Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said at the weekly briefing of the Presidential Task Force regarding COVID-19 on Monday, the 8th of March that.“Enugu airport will be opening on the 3rd of May 2021; Kano will resume on the 5th of April, 2021 and Port Harcourt will also open on the 15th of April, 2021 for international flights,”
President Muhammadu Buhari initially ordered the suspension of international flights in March 2020. The break was to limit the spread of the virus and halt imported cases.
While domestic flights were also suspended, they resumed in September 2020. The Nigerian Government later approved international flights in batches beginning with Lagos and Abuja international airports.
Mr. Sirika said there had been anxiety for the Government to reopen the airports for foreign operations.
“It takes a huge amount of work, proper management of this virus to decided to open the exit and other areas of arrival,” he expressed.
“We will take measures from time to time to manage the virus. It was quite painful for us in civil aviation to have our airports closed because the airport was our major source of income. Due to the closure, we were finding it very hard to pay salaries.”
Mr. Sirika said they are being made to ensure smooth and safe operations when the airports finally reopen.
As Nigeria is set to reopen airports for international flights-Enugu, Kano, & Port Harcourt, we look forward to the changes.
We hope that the safety of Nigerians has really been taken into consideration because the lives of the people matter.
