Babalawo Accompanies Omoyele Sowore to Court in Abuja
On March 2nd, a native doctor/Babalawo accompanies Omoyele Sowore to court in Abuja as he commenced his trial.
There was some drama at the Magistrate Court Abuja located at Wuse, Zone 2, on March 2nd, 2021, because a traditional spiritual leader, also known as a native doctor or Babalawo, followed the human rights activist Omoyele Sowore as he proceeded with the commencement of his trial.
Sowore was arrested alongside four others on December 31st, 2020 because they planned a candlelight march. The authorities charged them for supposed criminal conspiracy, unlawful gathering, and disturbing the public. The beginning of his trial was on March 2nd, 2021.
At the beginning of the trial, the native doctor seriously waved his horsewhip and gourd in the air while repeatedly chanting some incantations.
This was indeed a sight to see that generated a lot of attention and has made Sowore become trending news on social media.
We usually see native doctors or Babalawos in Nigerian Nollywood movies, but it became a reality because Sowore decided to work with one as he commenced with his trial. The human rights activist has taken us deeper into his traditional side with this open display of traditionalism.
Nigeria holds its culture in high esteem. But at the same time, dealing with Native doctors is what some people do in secret, not something that one does openly. To see a popular person boldly show Nigerians what his beliefs are is fascinating and separate from the norm.
In the picture, we can also see Sowore wearing his coral beads around his neck. Some people might think that this is just an attempt to frighten and threaten the accusers who arrested him. Others might feel that he genuinely has an added spiritual advantage and will ensure he wins the trial.
In this case, Sowore is ensuring that justice plays in his favor by any means necessary. We will be following up on this trial as it progresses.
The subsequent trial is taking place on March 11th, 2021. We also hope to see the spiritual adviser in all the court sittings.
