Femi Kuti’s Reaction To Fela’s Hall Of Fame Snub
Femi Kuti’s reaction to Fela’s hall Of fame snub by responding on Twitter to console Nigerians. For him, Fela’s legacy lives on.
Nigerian afrobeat singer, Femi Kuti reacted to how Fela Kuti’s was snubbed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after he was not inducted despite being the second most voted nominee.
After months of voting with Nigerian celebrities encouraging fans to vote for the late afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame were announced.
Legends such as Tina Turner, Carole Kings, Foo Fighters, Randy Rhoads, Charley Patton were mentioned under different categories but Fela Kuti was not mentioned.
In the announcement video shared via social media, Greg Harris, the president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, announced every name except Fela’s. Greg Harris did not give any reasons why Fela was not inducted despite being the second most voted after Tina Tuner, which didn’t seem fair in all aspects.
Femi Kuti reacted to Fela’s Rock & Roll snub, by going on Twitter to console Nigerians who felt bad after the result was announced. He explained that though Fela was not inducted, people got to know about Fela and his legacy.
Fela would have been inducted on the 30th of October, 2021, if he was part of those whose names were announced
In Femi Kuti’s words, “Apparently there’s another vote only members can take part in, and that’s what counts. So they kind of wasted our precious time, the positive side #Fela was trending and many who never heard of him got to hear his music and his story”
It was clear that Fela Kuti should have been one of those inducted, but sadly, there isn’t much fairness when it comes to these things. The voting seemed to have been unnecessary due to the fact that there was clear evidence that Fela was qualified but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thought otherwise.
