Gunmen kill 19 herders and 23 cows In Anambra State. They stormed Ukpomachi village with the sole aim of destroying lives and properties on Monday, the 26th of April.
The incident was a terrible one as gunmen ambushed Ukpomachi village, Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing 19 persons suspected to be herders while also destroying their properties worth millions of naira.
Alhaji Gidado Sidikkie, The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, southeast zone, who resides in Anambra State also affirmed the killing of 23 cows by the attackers.
According to the chairman. the incident happened at about 2 am on Monday at Modiyam Umaru camp where herdsmen have lived for many years.
In addition, children were also not spared by the attackers.
He said, “As I speak to you now, the dead bodies are with us at Amasea community in Awka North Local Government Area.
“One-year-old and two-year-old children, whose parents were murdered in the attack, are receiving treatment presently at an undisclosed hospital in the state.”
He, however, pleaded with his members not to react but allow the police and other security agencies to do their job to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
Furthermore, he said that the gunmen shot repeatedly, which, according to him, frightened students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, who took to their heels for fear of being killed.
To confirm the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that the investigation had begun to find out the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to him, “the Commissioner has ordered the prompt deployment of the command’s operational and intelligence assets to find out and arrest the unknown armed men who violently attacked Ukpomachi Village, Awkuzu in Oyi LGA of the State, in the early hours of April 26th, 2021.
“Meanwhile, a branch team of Police officers of the command, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, have visited the scene and carried out an immediate assessment of the incident.
He stated that the command had successfully restored peace in the area to prevent the incident from recurring.
Tochukwu further explained that the assailants were said to be armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons when they stormed the village in their numbers and mercilessly attacked the residents.
“The attack led to the death of nine people (whose identities have not yet been revealed), injuries on some others in addition to the destruction of buildings and livestock.”
The PPRO went on to say that the Commissioner had assured the Community, of the Command’s commitment to ensuring the Gunmen face the law while encouraging them to remain calm.
