Reasons we decided to send Bauchi prostitutes home: Hisbah, the goal is to send prostitutes back to their states of origin because sex work is not allowed in the state.
Aminu Isah, the Commissioner in Charge of Hisbah (Islamic police), Bauchi State Sharia Commission, explained that the security agency decided to send non-indigenous sex workers back to their states of origin majorly because prostitution is not allowed in Bauchi.
Speaking during a pre-Ramadan lecture organized by his office for sex workers at their Bayan Gari settlement in Bauchis’ capital city, he added that those who are from Bauchi would be handed over to their local council bosses.
Commercial sex work is not accepted in Bauchi. If they unable to return to their state of origin, definitely they must leave Bayan Gari where the prostitution sin is committed, because they are birthing a lot of criminals. They have given birth to a lot of children there. They are always giving birth and the children end up becoming threats to the state due to poor upbringing and lack of proper education.
There are so many criminals in the state and the kids born by these sex workers will be exposed to their characters. Therefore, the police has every right to make arrests, but they choose not to because prostitutes are people like everyone else and they have constitutional rights in Nigeria. So, the security agency is adopting the diplomatic approach
In addition, the agency has discovered the location of the commercial sex workers in Bayan Gari and also took a headcount during a workshop at the place.
His words: “We have designed a form, but prior to that, we documented the number of houses in that area. There are over 30 rented apartments in Bayan Gari, where the prostitutes live. We have made contact with the leaders and owners of those houses and the forms would be given to them to get the detailed data of the people.
The form will include state of origin, local council, and other details such as: contact address. After getting these information they will sort those who are not from Bauchi and liaise with their governments on how to hand them over to their family members.
He stated that those from Bauchi would be empowered by the government to become self sufficient.
The government will also see what they can do about those that will also choose the option of marriage.
These decisions will be taken in accordance with Section 41 of the Constitution that seeks to ensure that the citizens right to live in any part of the country is upheld. It is not going to be a forceful approach, but a diplomatic one.
