Why Buhari didn’t transfer power to Osinbajo – FG; Reports claim that Buhari will continue to rule Nigeria from the UK where he is receiving treatment.
The Presidency stated yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to lead the country from the United Kingdom where is meant to go for a medical check-up.
Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, explained that the President does not need to transfer power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo because he would be in the United Kingdom for just 14 days.
He said that the constitution expects the President to give power to his deputy if he is spending over 21 days outside the country.
Furthermore, the presidential assistant insisted that President Buhari has not gone against the laws of the land by not handing over power to Osinbajo while he is away from the country for a couple of days.
Shehu stated that the president will continue leading the nation from wherever he is.
“ What the law requires is that if the President is going to be absent in the country for 21 days and more, then he ought to transfer that leading power to the vice president. In this present circumstance, it is not necessary for him to do so.
“We pray to almighty God that no emergency will come up that will cause Mr president to spend more than 21 days in the UK.”
President Buhari traveled out of Nigeria and left for London on Tuesday the 30th of March for what the Presidency described as a “usual medical check-up.”
