I Will Lead PDP’s 2027 Campaign in Rivers, Wike Declares
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared his intention to lead the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s campaign in Rivers State for the 2027 general elections, putting to rest speculations about his political alignment and influence within the state.
Wike made this bold statement during a political gathering in Port Harcourt over the weekend, where party loyalists and stakeholders converged to discuss the future of the PDP in Rivers and strategize ahead of the next election cycle.
“Let me say it clearly: in 2027, I will lead the campaign of the PDP in Rivers State. No one should be in doubt about my commitment to the party and to the progress of this state,” Wike affirmed to cheers from party faithful.
The declaration comes amid ongoing tensions and speculated rift between Wike and the current Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. Since the beginning of the administration, political watchers have observed signs of strained relations between the two leaders, largely believed to be fallout from internal party politics and governance style differences.
Despite the speculations, Wike maintained that his loyalty remains with the PDP, and that he is focused on ensuring the party retains its stronghold in Rivers come 2027.
“People can say what they like. I know where I stand. PDP is my party, and I will ensure we continue to win elections in this state. We will not hand Rivers State over to those who do not understand our journey or our sacrifices,” he said.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key player in the PDP, also used the occasion to caution those he described as “political opportunists” who are attempting to sow division within the party.
“Some people think they can just wake up and hijack the PDP structure in Rivers. They were not there when we were building the party. They were nowhere to be found during our darkest days. They will not reap where they did not sow,” he said pointedly.
Political analysts view Wike’s latest statement as a strategic move to reassert dominance in Rivers politics ahead of 2027, and to send a clear message to rival factions within the PDP and beyond. With his large support base and track record as a political tactician, Wike’s influence remains formidable in the state.
However, Governor Fubara, who was Wike’s anointed successor, has subtly distanced himself from Wike’s political control in recent times, suggesting a shift in loyalty and approach. This has led to mounting political tension, with some stakeholders calling for unity and dialogue between both camps.
In his address, Wike hinted at the need for discipline and respect within the party, urging members not to be swayed by external influences or personal ambitions.
“Politics is not noise-making. It is about loyalty, structure, and results. We must remain focused and not allow anyone distract us from the bigger picture,” he stated.
Wike also appealed to PDP national leadership to remain neutral and avoid taking sides in the unfolding Rivers PDP crisis. He warned that any miscalculation could cost the party dearly in 2027.
“Let the national leadership of our party be wise. Rivers State has always delivered. We will continue to do so if we are treated with respect and fairness,” he said.
As 2027 draws closer, the political climate in Rivers State is expected to intensify, with Wike’s declaration setting the tone for what may become one of the most watched political battles in the South-South region.
