Buhari Mourns Victims of Niger State Floods and Kano Auto Crash

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over two tragic events that recently struck Nigeria—devastating floods in Niger State and a fatal auto crash in Kano State. In heartfelt condolence messages to the governments and citizens of both states, Buhari described the incidents as “painful and devastating,” while urging Nigerians to unite in grief and support for those affected.

Tragedy in Niger State: Deadly Flooding Wreaks Havoc

In Niger State, the town of Mokwa witnessed catastrophic flooding following relentless rainfall that led to the collapse of a nearby dam. The natural disaster caused the deaths of over 200 individuals, with more than 500 others still reported missing. At least 121 people sustained various degrees of injury.

According to local authorities, the flooding submerged the entire town, washed away over 3,000 homes, and significantly damaged critical infrastructure. Two major bridges collapsed, cutting off access to nearby communities, while farmlands and food crops were swept away—raising concerns over food insecurity and displacement.

In his condolence message, Buhari said, “I am heartbroken by the scenes of destruction in Niger State. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I commend the efforts of emergency responders and call on federal and state governments to work together to ensure that relief reaches those in dire need.”

This flood has been described as one of the worst natural disasters to hit Nigeria in recent times, with environmental experts attributing it to poor urban planning, blocked drainage systems, and climate change-induced weather patterns.

Kano State Auto Crash: 22 Lives Lost

In another heartbreaking event, a fatal road accident in Kano State claimed the lives of 22 young Nigerians, including athletes, coaches, and officials. The victims were returning from the Nigerian National Sports Festival held in Ogun State when the tragedy occurred. The bus conveying the group veered off the Chiromawa Bridge along the Kano-Zaria Expressway and plunged into a ravine.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash. Several other passengers were injured and rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Reacting to the sad development, Buhari described the incident as a “national loss.” He said, “These were promising young individuals who represented the spirit of unity and sportsmanship. Their untimely deaths are a huge blow not just to Kano State but to Nigeria as a whole. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”

The former president also extended his sympathies to the grieving families and called on relevant authorities to investigate the root cause of the crash to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He emphasized the need for better safety standards, particularly for long-distance travel involving youth and sports contingents.

National Mourning and Call to Action

The twin tragedies have triggered nationwide mourning, with several state governors, civil society groups, and concerned citizens expressing their condolences and solidarity. Relief agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have been deployed to assess the damage and coordinate rescue and recovery efforts in Niger State.

Meanwhile, calls for improved road safety, driver training, and stricter regulations on long-distance transport have gained traction following the Kano crash. Nigerians are demanding a more proactive approach from the government in addressing the recurring issues of infrastructure failure and emergency preparedness.

Buhari’s condolence messages serve as a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the need for compassion, unity, and prompt action during times of national crisis.

As the affected communities begin the long road to recovery, the thoughts of a nation remain with them. It is hoped that from these tragedies will arise a renewed commitment to safety, planning, and support for those in distress.
