Police confirm that an attack on the zonal headquarters in Anambra State was carried out by unknown gunmen who burnt the facility.
The zonal police headquarters, zone 13 Ukpo located in Anambra State has confirmed that its facility was attacked by unknown gunmen on Monday morning the 19th of April, 2021.
It was earlier reported that a building in the headquarters was burnt by the hoodlums, in addition to vehicles parked around the premises of the headquarters.
Zonal Public Relations Officer, DSP Nkeiruka Nwode, confirmed the above information, stating that they immediately defended themselves against the attackers, and some of their arms seized.
She also explained that the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Zone-13 Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State successfully repelled an attack on the zonal headquarters by criminal elements in the early hours of Monday, 19th April 2021.
The attackers, who came in their numbers, shooting recklessly in order to gain access to the facility, were prevented by the police officers on duty who showed profound bravery in the face of the seemingly major attack.
“Following the inability of the attackers to access the facility, they threw petrol bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on vehicles within the perimeter of the Headquarters.”
Furthermore, she states that one of the criminals was injured during the exchange of gunfire between the police and the attackers while a lot of the gang members escaped with gunshot injuries.
“One L7A2 General-Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), Ninety-two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one locally-made smoke pistol, and an ax were recovered by the Police. Unfortunately, two police officers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.
She also quoted CP Kuryas Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, who was also standing in for the Zonal Assistant Inspector General of Police. He equally commended the Police operatives for strongly resisting the attackers.
“The CP, supported by other senior officers from Zone-13 Headquarters and the State Command, is currently leading a special operation focused on tracing, identifying, and arresting the criminals who carried out the attack.
He equally informed all medical practitioners (including unorthodox) in and around Anambra State to admit, but also report anyone found seeking medical attention for bullet wounds and similar injuries to the nearest police station.
The CP encouraged the people of the state to be committed and go about their lawful duties, saying that the police will continually do its best to provide them with security.
