Doctors May Begin Strike on Wednesday
Resident doctors may begin strike on Wednesday the 301st of March due to receiving little to no financial support from the government.
With the exception of any change in their choice, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) may begin their strike action on Wednesday the 31st of March over what they described as the poor welfare of their fellow doctors across the country.
In a press release issued at the end of the extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NARD that took place on March 27, 2021, at the Trauma Centre, National Hospital, Abuja. The resident doctors said their offer given to the federal government at the January NEC meeting in Owerri, Imo State capital will expire by midnight on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, with no significant response from the authorities.
In the report signed by NARD President, Dr. Uyilawa Okuaihesyi and Secretary-General, Dr. Jerry Isogwu, the doctors complained about the suffering of some of their members in the GIFMIS platform who have not been paid salaries for four months now because of the delay in biometric capturing by the IPPIS department.
They lamented further that the alleged inhumane treatment members suffer in some states tertiary institutions like Abia State University Teaching Hospitals (ABSUTH), which owed some of their members 20 months’ salaries; Imo State University Teaching Hospitals (IMSUTH), owed five months’ salaries; and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospitals (UNIMEDTH), owed three months’ salaries.
The meeting focused on major issues affecting Healthcare Delivery, Residency Training, and the Welfare of its members all over the nation.
“The NEC noticed that her initial ultimatum given to the federal government during the January 2021 NEC meeting in Owerri, will end by 12 midnight on March 31, 2021, with no major progress.
“The NEC repeated her full support for the middle placement of house officers. Nevertheless, they condemned the pain our members have been forced to pass through for the past three months now without payment despite uninterrupted delivery of service to the country. This is because of the inefficiency of the Registrar of MDCN in handling the procedure as regards the placement of house officers as approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) since the year 2017”.
