Military Hits The Streets Of Onitsha In Search Of Criminals
The Military hits the streets of Onitsha in search of criminals causing havoc in the state because insecurity has become a rampant issue in our modern-day society.
Tension struck in Onitsha, the business hub of Anambra State, on Tuesday, the 23rd of March as the military took over different areas of the city to search for the culprits carrying out criminal activities in the state.
Military officers were sent to the town to arrest people reported to be part of the recent killings and kidnap of security operatives and civilians in the state.
Governor Willie Obiano directed the security personnel in the state on Sunday, which included youths, vigilantes and community leaders to step up to the security challenges the state is facing.
Military officers could be seen at Atani Road, located at Upper Iweka in Onitsha, and on Onitsha-Owerri Road. They blocked the roads for possible stop-and-search operations.
Last week, raging gunmen attacked some police stations in the state, killed some police officers, and stole arms and ammunition.
The gunmen took the lives of some policemen in Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area while they were at a checkpoint.
Before then, they killed four policemen in Nkpologwu located in the Aguata local government area of the state weeks ago.
The unidentified gunmen also abducted and killed the president-general of the Omor community in the Ayamelum local government area, in addition to ending the life of a prison officer in Ekwulobia ,Aguata local government.
They also killed a naval personnel at an outpost in Awkuzu junction, located in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra state.
One of the traders in Onitsha confirmed the heavy military presence in Onitsha saying soldiers had blocked some roads in Onitsha.
“No one can move around Enamel Junction, and also on Onitsha-Owerri as at yesterday evening the 22nd of March because the soldiers obstructed everywhere. The shooting was a lot.
A source also said that he received information from his driver that Atani and Obodo Ukwu roads were also blocked.
DSP Ikenganya Tochukwu, the Anambra State Police Public Relations officer, said that regarding the military’s presence as of now the command is not aware of the military’s presence in the state, specifically in Onitsha.”
He promised to give information to reporters once he confirms from Onitsha area Command.
