POTUS-elect Joe Biden plans to kick off his new administration on Wednesday with instructions to reinstate the United States and the World Health Organisation to the Paris climate agreement, aides said.
Just hours after being sworn in as US leader, Biden would sign 17 orders and measures to break from the policies of departing President Donald Trump and set new directions on immigration, the environment, the war against Covid-19 and the climate, they said.
In the first-day steps, Trump’s much-attacked ban on travelers from many Muslim-majority countries will end and the building of the wall requested by Trump on the US-Mexico border to curb illegal immigration will cease, the aides added.
In order to avoid the spread of Covid-19, he will also set a mask mandate on federal properties; restore protection to precious nature reserves withdrawn by Trump, and pursue freezes on evictions and protection for millions behind on their mortgages because of the coronavirus pandemic.
He also plans to submit a bill to Congress to revamp immigration laws and offer a path to citizenship that was rejected by the Trump administration to millions of undocumented migrants residing within the country.
Given the in-depth health and economic problems facing the world, Biden’s staff said he wanted to hit the ground running.
Biden “will take action — not just to reverse the gravest damages of the Trump administration — but also to start moving our country forward,” the aides said in a statement.
“These actions are bold, begin the work of following through on President-elect Biden’s promises to the American people, and, importantly, fall within the constitutional role for the president.”
