President Muhammadu Buhari sent a congratulatory message to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres on his re-appointment for a second-tenure in office, and extension of Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed’s tenure for another five years.
The President’s congratulatory message can be found in a statement issued by Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, in Abuja over the weekend.
The leader of the Federal Republic of Nigeria congratulated the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General, who was a former Minister of Environment in Nigeria, for the global recognition and opportunity to serve humanity with their years of experience.
He expressed the hope that their passion to promote peace, alleviate poverty, improve health and empower more people would be faster and yield more positive results. The president was truly elated at the reappointment and extension of tenure for the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.
According to the president, Mohammed’s extension in office will further encourage more women and the girl-child, particularly in Africa and Nigeria, to be encouraged to attain higher heights of leadership, dream beyond the borders of their country and learn from her dedication to seeing lives transformed for the better.
This is truly a stepping stone for women and the girl child in general who are often times not encouraged to take on leadership roles or given the opportunity to learn and grow due to their gender.
The president felicitated with the former minister for all her contributions to development, both at home and abroad.
He prayed that the almighty God would continue to give her good health, strength and more wisdom for the journey ahead.
