FG imposes fresh COVID-19 restrictions
The Federal Government, FG imposes fresh COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings to limit the spread of the coronavirus all across the country.
The Nigerian government has ordered that bars and recreation centers be closed, placing a limit on public gatherings all across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to COVID-19.
Mukhtar Mohammed, the National Incident Manager, and also a member of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19, announced the new directive yesterday (Monday, the 10th of May, 2021), during a briefing in Abuja.
Mr. Mohammed said the new curfew would take effect from today (Tuesday, the 11th of May, 2021) by midnight, noting that public gatherings should be reduced to 50 persons.
He also stated that anyone without a facemask would not be allowed into any government institution across the country.
According to Mohammed, all official engagements, meetings, and conferences should be conducted through virtual channels while travels had also been limited.
Mohammed revealed that closing bars and nightclubs across the nation would be in place until the further directive is given from the president regards any new development.
Unlike the initial phase of national lockdown that started in 2020, Mohammed stated that intra-states travels were not banned but only specific international travels would be allowed with adherence to protective measures.
Furthermore, the committee directed security personnel across the 36 states and the FCT to enforce compliance to the measures put in place.
Despite the recorded cases of COVID-19 infections and deaths, a documentary by The ICIR had revealed that many Nigerian still show skepticism about the existence of the virus.
After the first index case was recorded in February 2020, Nigeria has recorded over 165,000 positive cases of the virus, while 2,065 persons have died from it with 156,000 discharged, having recovered from the diseases.
Consequently, with the introduction of the vaccine, the Nigerian government has also vaccinated more than 1 million out of its estimated 200 million population, and so more are still yet to be vaccinated.
